Five million dead and counting

1. What events led to the outbreak of war in the DR Congo ?

A. The events that led to the outbreak of the war was the living conditions of people in Congo, who were living in ditches. They were filling up floors of the churches and men and young boys were forced into armed groups. Laurent Nkunda , who was a former general in Congo's army, had launched a war. This war was to save the Congolese people from a government who had no protection for it's people.

2. How many have died in this war? Over what time frame has the deaths taken place? What countries and ethnic groups are involved?

B. It is said that the total of people that died in this conflict has been five million and counting. It began June 2007 to and unknown date. The countries and ethnics groups that were involved were the DRC (Democratic Republican of Congo), the Kivutians, the Tutsi, and the Hutu. Knowing that approximately five million people have lost their lives is very disturbing.

3. What do you think can happen to stop the war/genocide in Congo?

C. What i think can happen to stop the war/genocide in Congo is that made they can do a cease fire like the Rwanda genocide. I would hope that the war/genocide would stop and that there would be peace. The people of Congo deserve a much much better life. They shouldn't have to go through this.

Rwanda Homework

1. What factors led to the genocide in Rwanda in 1994?

A. The genocide was sparked by the death of by the Rwandan president Juneval Habyarimana. His plane  was shot down over the Kigali airport. This event took place on April 6,1994. The death of the beloved pesident wasn't the only thing that sparked the Rwanda genocide. There was more to this horrifying story.

2. What was the time frame of the 1994 genocide and how many people died?

B. The time frame of the 1994 genocide was from April of 1994 to June of 1994. It was said that an estimated 800,000 people were killed in a matter of 100 days. In total there were probably about 5 million deaths from this massacre. Some of the Tutsi were able to flee to Zaire which is now called the Democratic Republic of Congo

3. What were some of the after effects of the genocide?

C. In July the RPF captured Kigali and the government collasped and the RPF declared a ceasefire. Even though the killing was over many conflicts have been started in the DR Congo. Most of the peace- keeping force were unable to stop the fighting. I learned so much from this heart breaking experience. I truly feel bad for those who lost their lives
